This vintage chest is from Shanxi Province in Northern China and dates from around 1940. Made from elm, it has a painting on the front of two peony flowers and a bud, with a perching bird, framed by a floral and geometric border. The top and sides have distressed red paint. The form of the trunk has been made using box joints. The front fasting and and hinges are iron. The marks of time give this chest a charming sense of history.
