This vintage sideboard comes from Gansu Province in Northern China and dates from around 1920. It has recently been restored in an artisan workshop in the Beijing area. As with many pieces from Gansu, it is decorated with bright painted motifs from nature. Against a deep red background, the doors and two of the drawers have vivid paintings of peonies and birds, representing status and prosperity. The central drawer depicts a lotus flower and birds, representing purity and beauty. The storage compartment runs across the width of the piece and is split horizontally by a removable shelf. The central strut between the doors can be removed to provide easier access. The two wide doors are hinged to make it easier to open them if space is restricted.
Materials: poplar with brass fittings
