This vintage cabinet comes from Shanxi Province in Northern China and dates from the 1920s. It has recently been reconditioned in an artisan workshop in Beijing. The distressed cobalt blue finish is achieved by applying many layers and rubbing back the areas between successive layers to reveal the dark undercoat beneath. The two generous compartments have been fitted with two removable inner shelves.
Along the bottom apron, an attractive stepped design has been carved into the wood, creating an understated yet handsome piece that works well against a range of interiors. Its shelving and proportions make this a useful addition to any home or office storage. The two generous compartments could work well as a linen closet, bathroom shelving, home office, or kitchen pantry.
