This vintage Chinese chest is from Shanxi Province and dates from circa 1920 and is made from elm. On the front is a painted motif of a peony in bloom against a brown background. In Chinese visual art, peonies are traditionally associated with wealth and rank. The lid is secured with an iron catch. Where the paint has worn on the edges you can see the dovetail joints used in the construction of this chest. The marks of time give this chest a sense of history.
