This large vintage sideboard comes from Gansu Province in Northern China and dates from about 1900. The cabinet doors retain three original handpainted panels, two of which feature peony flowers, and the central panel details a traditional mountain landscape complete with arched stone bridge and terraced home.
Traditionally peonies symbolise female beauty, as well as richness, honour and high social class. Chinese landscape painting is thought of as the highest form of art and depicts a love of nature, community, and home. The paintings are bordered with a distressed warm orange-yellow that also covers the backs and top of the piece. Below the doors, the wood has been carved to reveal a unique decorative skirting.
The proportions of this stunning cabinet makes it a great addition to any living room. Its storage capacity and subtle colours also make it a good choice a bedroom, office or hallway. We think the simple design of this cabinet would add a lovely bohemian touch to a modern home.
