This vintage sideboard comes from Dongbei Province in Northern China and dates from the 1920s. It has recently been reconditioned in an artisan workshop in Beijing where the main storage compartment was fitted with a removable shelf, allowing you to choose the height you need for items and the missing external metal hinges have been replaced with concealed wooden dowel hinges. The four doors are decorated with motifs of peacocks and phoenix or Fenghuang roosting in peonies. Like many of the floral and fauna used in Chinese art these can have more than one symbolic meaning. Peonies can symbolise luck, prosperity, and fortune as well as female beauty. The peacock represents beauty and dignity as well as civilization and culture The Fenghuang can represents virtue and grace, but also the union of male and female. The colours and decorative painting of this sideboard makes this a strong focal point in a room.
