It was initiated in Japan around the 7th Century A.D. and since then embraced as a traditional craft. Originally, temari balls emerged as a creative way of using waste materials: rice husks were used to make the core of the ball, and left-over silk threads from the kimono making were used to make the spherical base and stitch the patterns. A variety of patterns started to develop in different regions of the country, displaying intricate geometric designs embroidered on its spherical shape. Traditionally they are given away as gifts for newly born babies, something like a lucky charm.

Temari is a craft that many of our grandmothers practiced at some point, but nowadays it is not as common as it used to be. Luckily, Sachiyo the workshop leader had the chance to learn from two very talented Japanese women who came to London to do a temari workshop. They were aiming to spread their knowledge of this craft that is in the brink of extinction, and now Sachiyo is joining their quest of teaching this wonderful craft, so it doesn’t disappear in the future.

For the workshop at Rouge shop, Sachiyo will teach how to make one of the traditional patterns. You will make the ball from scratch, and then she will explain the basic principles to make the guidelines and stitch the patterns. We hope you will enjoy making temari.

All material included.
