Vintage Tibetan Chest with Tiger and Conch Motifs

Available for Delivery 2-4 Weeks - not currently on display in the shop

This vintage Tibetan chest dates from the 1900s. It recently received very light restoration in an artisan workshop in Beijing.

This joyous and unique piece contains a wealth of original detail, including several original hand-painted panels in stunning ochre and gold, embossed and painted leatherwork, and crafted metal brackets surrounding each edge. Paintwork panels detail the traditional Tibetan symbols of the conch shell and tiger, representing power, authority, and fearlessness. In Tibetan Buddhism in particular, the Conch Shell is closely associated with the Buddha’s teaching, it is the logo of sovereignty to the teachings. Here the conch symbolizes his fearlessness in proclaiming the truth of the dharma. Adding the Tiger here shows signs of compassion and generosity.

This special trunk makes a powerful and lively statement piece with bags of internal storage. Decorative artwork is seen on all sides of the trunk, with ornate gold-coloured scrolling detail surrounding each panel. This is ideal as a coffee or side table, a keep safe for treasured items, or equally at home by the end of a bed.

Dimensions: 80(w) x 48(d) x 41(h) cm
