This vintage cabinet comes from Gansu Province in Northern China and dates from the 1960s. Typically of this region, the two door panels are painted with a scene showing peonies on a yellow and green background, bordered with a deep red. Peonies are traditional auspicious symbols for status and wealth. The structural framing at the front and the top have a distressed black paint finish with areas of the poplar wood showing through. The sides are unpainted, though sealed with a gloss finish. It has recently been reconditioned in an artisan workshop in Beijing and has been fitted with one removable inner shelf.
