Originating in the Shandong Province of Northern China in the 1920s, this dark yellow desk has recently been reconditioned in an artisan workshop in Beijing. Except the drawer fronts, it has been repainted in this distressed colour, successively rubbed back to reveal areas of the dark undercoat and the wood beneath. The drawer fronts give an idea of what the original painted finish was, with floral motifs against a deep red background.
With its relatively shallow depth, but broad worktop, this desk is a really useful central piece for a home office, entrance hallway or bedroom dressing table.
