This special vintage Chinese lattice-fronted cabinet originates from Hebei Province in Northern China and dates from the 1920s. It has been recently restored in an artisan workshop in Beijing. This handsome piece features original carving and has been repainted with a subtle turqoise blue green. The paintwork has been rubbed back to reveal both the original woodwork and the warmer tones of an original colour.
The upper portion has four ornate lattice panels and this storage compartment can be accessed by two central lattice doors. Beneath this are two small drawers, and then below these another large compartment, accessed by two doors. Originally used as kitchen storage, this elegant piece is equally at home in a variety of modern spaces. Its simple design and ample storage make it perfect as a free-standing kitchen piece, a linen closet, office storage or bathroom cabinet.
A very special feature of this cabinet is the unusual carving detail at its center, a cuboidal optical illusion design set off by the hints of red and orange paint peeking through.
