This vintage pine sideboard comes from the Northern Province of Gansu and dates from the 1920s. The two doors open onto a large storage area into which a new removable shelf has been added as part of the reconditioning work done at an artisan workshop in Beijing. As part of this work the main panels have been repainted with a soft grey/green, finished with a gloss varnish. This distressed finish shows areas of the dark undercoat as well as patches of the original wood. The doors still show the traditional motifs of peonies symbolising wealth, high social standing, feminine beauty and conjugal bliss. This may well have been made as a wedding piece.
We think the simple lines and good proportions of this piece make it a great fit for a modern interior as well as a more traditional one.
Dimensions: 166(w) x 40(d) x 86(h) cm
