This vintage pine sideboard comes from the Northern Province of Gansu and dates from the 1920s. The two doors open onto a large storage area into which a new removable shelf has been added as part of the reconditioning work done at an artisan workshop in Beijing.
As part of this work the main panels have been repainted with a pale, apple green finish, then gloss varnished. This distressed finish shows areas of the dark undercoat as well as patches of the original woodwork beneath. The doors retain the traditional floral motifs that include peonies symbolising wealth, high social standing and feminine beauty and conjugal bliss.
We think the simple lines and great proportions of this sideboard will fit well into any modern interior and make a beautiful addition to the overall look.
