This vintage poplar sideboard was made in Gansu Province in China around 1920. It has two doors opening onto the main storage compartment with one removable shelf. The front frame, sides and top have worn reddish brown paint showing areas of the poplar wood beneath. The doors have a typical design from Gansu of peony flowers with perching birds on the right and mandarin dusks with lotus plants on the left door. The drawer fronts retain much of the original green paint. It has recently been restored in an artisan workshop in Beijing, retains the faded soft colours.
Materials: poplar with brass fittings
