This sideboard comes from Shanxi Province of China and dates from about 1900. The piece has recently been reconditioned in an artisan workshop in Beijing and was fitted with a removable inner shelf. The doors feature original floral artwork with bright peonies, traditionally symbolising female beauty, as well as richness, honour and high social class. Overall, the cabinet has a stunning burnt orange colour with a distressed appearance in places, revealing the dark colour underneath.
