Cushion Indigo Artist Pattern 'Coffee Tea or Me' - 50 x 50cm

The front of this cushion is made with fabric that is hand-dyed with natural indigo, using the ancient resist paste technique from Eastern China known as Lan Yin Hua Bu. Each pattern is created from a hand cut template, which is placed on the natural cotton fabric and covered with a lime and soy bean paste. After the dyeing and drying process, this paste is scraped off to reveal the beautiful pattern.

Sex is a series of prints that draws on the textile tradition of storytelling through symbolism, exploring human relationships, life’s rituals, and fortunes. Birds and Bees and Coffee, Tea or Me? delve into the complexities of romantic encounters, highlighting both the joy and challenge of love.

Coffee, Tea or Me? – once a cheeky pick-up line from flight attendants – becomes a playful visual pun here. Using a trio of botanical elements (rubber plant leaves, coffee beans, and tea plant), the print playfully hints at a romantic setting, whether in the bedroom or at the table.

While the prints initially echo familiar textile motifs, their layered symbolism tells a deeper story. Alex’s work consistently uses nature to reflect on human experience, connection, and our relationship with the world around us.
