This wonderful vintage elm cabinet comes from Shanxi Province in Northern China and dates from the 1920s. It has recently been reconditioned in an artisan workshop in Shandong. The distressed yet vibrant red finish is achieved by applying many layers of paint and rubbing back areas between successive layers to reveal the dark undercoat beneath.
In a stunning vermillion red, two main doors open onto a removable inner shelf for the main storage compartment and it has four drawers, two small and two larger. The front apron displays a wonderful decorative carving to an otherwise modest design.
We think the simple, understated design with many storage pockets makes this cabinet a lovely addition to any home office, bedroom, or toy store in a nursery. Its dimensions also make it an ideal yet bohemian style media stand for living or TV rooms.
