This deep brown Chinese chest is from Shanxi Province and dates from the 1920s. Much of the original paint survives on the front, with the motifs depicting Chinese lotus flowers, symbolising purity and integrity.
This is bordered with typical geometric linking patterns. The sides, back and top are unpainted. The inside features a faded geometric deep green and yellow pattern.
This lightweight chest should be handled with care due to its age. Its original lacquered finish is peeling in areas.
