Vintage Chinese Crackle Blue Sideboard with floral painting 09

This stunning, vintage, pine sideboard comes from the Northern Province of Gansu and dates from the 1920s. Two doors open onto a large storage area into which a new removable shelf has been added as part of the reconditioning work done at an artisan workshop in Beijing.

As part of this work much of the original artwork has been retained and appears as a delicate faded beauty. The two doors each have a panel featuring stunning red/orange peonies, a traditional motif, symbolising wealth, high social standing, feminine beauty and conjugal bliss. The surrounding frames, sides and top of the piece have a beautiful, crackled style paintwork in faded pale blue, worn in places to reveal a darker undercoat. This may well have been made as a wedding piece.

We think the simple lines and good proportions of this piece make it a great fit for a modern interior as well as a more traditional one. These versatile cabinets are excellent as linen/towel closets, dining room sideboards or even in a studio/office as a stylish alternative for storage.
