This medium sized low bench originates in the Shanxi Province of China and was made in the 1930s. Made from beautifully aged elmwood this neat bench would have been an important part of the household.
It has recently been lightly restored in an artisan workshop in Beijing revealing the true woodwork but maintaining its original look. The simple structure and use of elmwood makes this a special, attractive piece. Its low height make this perfect as a decorative platform to display larger plants or ornaments. Or a foot stool. They are also often used as small devotional spaces or alters.
