Vintage Cupboard from Jiangsu with Bamboo Panels

This vintage cupboard was made in Jiansu Province of Northern China and dates from circa 1920. It has recently been restored in an artisan workshop near Beijing where it was repainted in this faded blue. The distinguishing feature of this piece is the use of small lengths of bamboo in the door panels and the panels on both sides. The two larger storage compartments at the top have removable shelves, giving more flexibility to store taller items if needed. The small compartment at the bottom is accessed by the two central sliding doors.

These beautiful and versatile cabinets were originally used in traditional kitchens to store fresh and prepared food in a well-aired space.  In modern homes they work perfectly in a range of rooms, including linen closet in the bathroom, cocktail cabinet, freestanding kitchen storage or an office tidy, generally great for organisation. Its beautifully distressed light blue green finish and highly ornamental lattice work make this cabinet a stand out piece in any room.
